A waveform is the time-varying shape and polarity pattern of the electrical output delivered by a stimulator.

Waveform

Waveform descriptions can include whether pulses are monophasic or biphasic, symmetrical or asymmetrical, charge-balanced or not, rectangular or otherwise shaped, continuous or grouped into bursts.

Frequency, pulse width, amplitude, phase order, interphase interval, and duty cycle may all form part of a complete waveform description. A device name or marketing label is not a substitute for these details.

Different waveforms can change current delivery, sensation, electrode behaviour, and neural recruitment. Findings from a proprietary waveform should not be assumed to apply to another device with different output characteristics.

What the term does not establish

Keep the category boundary visible

  • It is not the same as frequency or pulse width alone.
  • A waveform name does not establish target engagement or effectiveness.
  • Two devices are not equivalent merely because they use the same nominal frequency.
