Stimulation frequency

A frequency of 20 Hz, for example, usually means twenty repeated pulses or pulse cycles each second. Complex waveforms can also contain burst, carrier, or alternating frequencies that require more detailed reporting.

Frequency interacts with pulse width, intensity, waveform, electrode, site, duty cycle, and total session duration. Changing one parameter can alter sensation and neural recruitment even when the others remain fixed.

Studies use different frequencies for different methods, populations, and outcomes. A finding at one frequency does not establish a universal optimum or apply automatically to another device.
