Expanded definition

Session duration

Session duration is normally reported in minutes, but the meaning depends on the protocol. A 30-minute session may contain continuous stimulation or repeated on/off periods with less than 30 minutes of active output.

It should be distinguished from the number of sessions, the spacing between sessions, the number of treatment days, and cumulative exposure across a study or routine.

Duration can interact with intensity, frequency, duty cycle, tolerability, and the outcome being measured. A duration used in one population or device cannot be assumed to be optimal for another.

What the term does not establish

Keep the category boundary visible

  • It is not necessarily equal to active stimulation time.
  • It does not describe how often sessions occur or how many weeks a programme lasts.
  • A longer session is not automatically more effective or more appropriate.

Why the distinction matters

Precision changes interpretation

Clear duration reporting prevents a study's total exposure from being reduced to one ambiguous number and helps readers compare protocols responsibly.
