The earlobe is the soft, lower part of the outer ear and is composed mainly of skin, connective tissue, and fat rather than cartilage.

Earlobe

The earlobe, or auricular lobule, hangs below the cartilaginous framework of the outer ear. Its structure and innervation differ from the tragus and conchal regions used in many active taVNS protocols.

Researchers often choose the earlobe as a sham or comparison site because it is generally treated as having little or no direct auricular vagal supply while still allowing a participant to feel stimulation.

A sham site must still be evaluated. Sensation, blinding, electrode contact, current spread, and possible physiological effects determine whether an earlobe control is credible for a particular study.

  • It is not the same structure as the tragus, cymba conchae, or cavum conchae.
