Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation

taVNS is a research and device-method family, not one standardised treatment. Studies differ in ear location, electrode design, waveform, intensity, session length, control condition, and participant group.

The method is commonly discussed in relation to the auricular branch of the vagus nerve, but the outer ear has mixed and overlapping innervation. Placement language should therefore remain anatomically careful.

A sensation can confirm that an electrode contacts the skin and that stimulation is perceived. Sensation alone cannot establish selective neural target engagement or a particular downstream effect.
