The ABVN is central to many explanations of auricular VNS because selected outer-ear regions are discussed as possible access points to vagal sensory pathways.
External-ear innervation is mixed, overlapping, and variable. Other nerves also supply the ear, and anatomical maps do not guarantee selective engagement in an individual person or protocol.
Research interpretation therefore depends on exact placement, electrode geometry, stimulation parameters, controls, and independent evidence—not on the label ABVN alone.
