VNS is an umbrella category. It includes surgically implanted systems used in clinical care and several non-invasive approaches that apply stimulation through the skin at the neck or outer ear.
The label alone does not define a device, anatomical target, waveform, intensity, session length, population, or intended use. Those details determine what a study or product claim can responsibly support.
Evidence from one VNS method should not be transferred automatically to another. Implanted VNS, cervical non-invasive VNS, transcutaneous VNS, and auricular approaches may share a category name while differing substantially in design and evidence.
