Parasympathetic nervous system

Parasympathetic pathways help regulate organs and bodily functions in a context-dependent way. The vagus nerve carries a large share of parasympathetic output to organs in the chest and abdomen, while other cranial and sacral pathways also contribute.

“Rest and digest” is a useful introductory phrase, but it is incomplete. Parasympathetic activity can be present during movement, social interaction, digestion, sleep, and many mixed physiological states.

Healthy regulation is not about keeping parasympathetic activity permanently high. It is about adapting appropriately and recovering when demands change.

What the term does not establish

Keep the category boundary visible

  • It is not identical to the vagus nerve.
  • It is not always “good” while sympathetic activity is always “bad”.
  • It is not a single relaxation state that can be switched on at will.
